From Motion Capture to 3D Animation

From Motion Capture to 3D Animation from Cameron Mitchell on Vimeo.

Watch this video to see the process of transforming motion capture into 3D animations by using Measurand's ShapeWrap system. It's a really neat look at how motion capture works with 3D animation and video games.

Canon 7D Test - 1920x1080p30

Canon 7D Test - 1920x1080p30 from kfenter on Vimeo.

Canon 7D with battery clip
14mm 2.8L
70-200mm 2.8L

Here are some unaltered test shots from the Canon 7D. Overall, I was testing for how the camera deals with motion, quality of the footage, and overall handling compared to a video camera.

Motion:
If you shoot with too long a shutter speed (1/15), I feel that the footage begins to have an unnatural trail, but if the shutter speed is too quick (1/120) everything looks unnaturally sharp.

Quality of Footage:
The footage is not RAW, but is compressed H264 in camera. Some of the compression begins to show noise in soft ares, and too much sharpening in contrasting areas. I also noticed the "purple edge", on some of high contrast parts of a shot. Anyway, it stills looks great even if it isn't perfect. There has been talk of a RAW video format... so...

Handling:
The 7D (even with the battery clip) is not balanced like a video camera. I did some hand held tests which seemed too shaky for handheld. The first thing I would suggest buying or building a rig to balance the camera length-wise, to mimic the long body of a video camera. Everything on the Tripod looks very nice, and adjusting the focus and zoom can be done without causes the camera to jitter.

Workflow:
I used Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 for the edit. First of all, it's so nice not having to log and capture footage from tape. The video files from the 7D are H264 so I set the sequence settings to H264, and match the frame rate and pixel dimensions of the footage. Everything plays back realtime, no rendering! When you export using the "Current Settings" the edit is not compressed again, giving you great quality and relatively small file size.

Overall:
The 7D shoots great images, and can shoot HD video, and it's cheap. That's amazing... But it needs a lot of modifications to make it handle a video camera.

HDR Timelapse and HDR Video by Michael James

Most of this was shot with a Nikon D3 on auto bracketing firing 9 frames with 1EV jumps between. A couple sequences were shot with a Canon T2i and 3aeb +/-2EV.

The architectural interior sequences are actually just 8-12 total frames shot as a pano (each frame was a tonemapped version of the 9aeb capture). I then ran those 8-12 frames through Apple's Shake 4 and optical flow. It did a pretty good job at creating extra frames considering how big the jumps were between frames (amount panned). However, as you can see on some pans, there are artifacts (Left and Right edges where straight lines go wavy for a second). That is due to the software guessing at the movement of pixels between frames.

I really need to see if The Foundry's Kronos retimer can handle the optical flow better.

Ideally, I should have shot those architectural sequences and the garden sequence with many more in between frames. Actually I'm really looking forward to the Dynamic Perception motion controller that Jay Burlage has been a part of and testing along with Open Mocco. I can't wait to start using that combo!!!

The British Fashion Council and INCA Productions approached Silent Studios to design & art direct the holographic projection content for the British Fashion Awards, held at Royal Courts of Justice, London.

Director Mark Jenkinson was commissioned to shoot a film celebrating the British Fashion Council's 25th Anniversary. The holographic film of models wearing groundbreaking pieces from the last 25 years blurred the real with the hyper-real. Filmed on high speed cameras for slow motion playback, the 3D effect provided a dreamlike accompaniment to dinner in the Great Hall.

The Last Tree by Michael Shaw

The Last Tree from Michael Shaw on Vimeo.

I am not the greatest typography artist; not even decent to be honest. However, I feel that Weingart gave me a direction to take my assignment that works with my strengths while still helping me explore typography in my own distinct way. I used type to create environments, characters, and objects. In the animation, I wanted the forms created to show more than the objects used to make them. Having said that, they are still easily readable, making it easier to use letters as texture... much like the stubble on the face of the woodcutter.

I wanted to provide a unique take on the relationship from the lion and the mouse. Instead of the lion needing the mouse's help after freeing him, the wood cutter is left with one tree to stand under after completing his daily duties. This project was born more out of introspection than anything else. I thought about those whose job is to kill these trees for our personal benefit, like the mouse as a hearty snack for the lion. It would only seem natural to seek shelter under the very tree one is about to cut should there be a spontaneous downpour. One could argue that that is their purpose, but it is still a little startling to think about.

There are a lot of things i think can be improved from this animation. It could be shortened definitely. There are also a couple of awkward camera movements that could be rectified. In regards to the narrative, i am trying to work with somewhat longer works, just to help boost my own storytelling skills. That said, I can make a confusing story if not careful. I know this animation is not a direct interpretation of the lion and the mouse, but still supports the moral at the end.

Is this animation easily interpreted?

The Ballet Font Project by fashionbuddha

The Ballet Font Project from fashionbuddha on Vimeo.

In celebration of education and the arts, w+k12 and Fashionbuddha combined typography with the unique grace of ballet.

The resulting font is based on the physical movements of two Oregon ballet dancers, Grace Shibley and Lucas Threefoot, and the work of choreographer Candace Bouchard. The dancer were fitted with infrared LED lights, which captured their steps in real time as the danced all 26 letters of the alphabet. The dancers' performance was filmed using an HD video camera and a camera with an infrared filter. Using custom software, the infrared light traced the dancers' movements over the top of the HD video in real time. A second application evaluated the movement and converted the points and lines into a usable, TrueType font.

The downloadable font and videos showing the movement and animation for each letter are available at balletfont.com

Let me be clear: I am not an animator. But I've worked with lots of clients who want animated commercials. So I've learned how to work with motion graphic designers. Sometimes I cut video to give them to animate around and other times, it's a matter of providing just the right music and sound effects to inspire them. (For one the spots included here, I even gave them the cushion on my newly reupholstered sofa to suggest a motif!) Anyway, I played a large part in conceiving or executing all of the animations you see here, even if I didn't actually edit them in the traditional sense. Enjoy!
